Yellow stickers and safety inspection in Ontario
Who is required to get it?
Commercial pickup trucks and trailers used to transport cargo
Commercial pickup trucks and trailers used to transport cargo are subject to a mandatory annual safety inspection and yellow sticker display if the combined weight of the vehicle (truck, trailer and cargo) exceeds 4,500 kg or 9,920 lbs.
Dready and Son’s Brampton is a Motor Vehicle Inspection Station authorized by the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) that performs safety inspections and can issue yellow stickers if the vehicle passes safety standards.
This sticker must be applied to your vehicle and should be clearly visible.
Regulation 611: Personal use pickup trucks and trailers
As of July 1, 2019, personal use pickup trucks and trailers are exempted from the requirement of both, an annual safety inspection and displaying the yellow sticker under the following conditions:
- The pickup truck and trailer are being used for personal use without compensation; AND
- The pickup truck and trailer are NOT carrying commercial tools or cargo, or equipment of a type normally used for commercial purposes.
For the exemption to apply, the pick up truck must:
- Have a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 6,500 kgs or less AND
- Be fitted with the original, unmodified replacement box that was installed by the manufacturer or an unmodified replacement box that duplicates the one originally installed by the manufacturer.
Why is an annual safety check required?
An annual safety check as the name suggests is valid for 12 months and must be renewed prior to expiry to avoid hefty fines. This inspection is put in place to ensure that each vehicle is safe to operate and will reduce accidents caused by mechanical defects.
The following are the components thoroughly inspected to ensure that they comply with the National Safety Standards.
- Couplers and hitches
- Vehicle Body
- Lamps
- Steering
